Before the official formation of the association two company visits took place. The first of these was at Mike Rowland and Son, Wheelwrights and Coachbuilders on a very cold February day in Devon. The guests were given a tour of the works and were shown the process of wheelbonding, putting the hot iron tyre onto a wooden wheel, before retiring for some very welcome refreshment. At the meeting, Richard Peck, the national secretary was presented with a hand painted coat of arms for the new association, painted by Mr. Eric West, Heraldic Artist to Her Majesty the Queen, and this was held on a bespoke easel made by Mike Rowland. A very enjoyable day was had by all.
This was followed in the summer of 2010 by a visit to Winterborne Zelston fencing. Richard Bower provided us with a wonderful display of his work, in a fantastic setting. Richard gave us a talk on the World of Cleft and then proceeded to show us the work that his company produce. This was followed by a superb buffet wonderfully prepared by Richard’s wife and family. In the afternoon we went to Richard’s yard where we were given a display of oak cleaving followed by a charcoal burners demonstration. Another informative day that was enjoyed by everyone.
We are carrying on the visits as they are very well received and if you are interested in hosting an association day please contact us.
